Unveiling of Wicked: For Good Trailer
The new trailer for Wicked: For Good has arrived, and excitement is in the air. Wicked: For Good is the second part of the movie adaptation of Wicked. Wicked is a phenomenally successful musical. PEOPLE enthuses: “Fans of the Broadway musical were defying gravity on Wednesday, June 4.” The film the trailer introduces will be in movie theaters starting November 21, 2025.
The enthusiastically received trailer was first officially shown on June 4, 2025. The Guardian reports it features “Elphaba in hiding, for her opposition to the Wizard’s regime.” Elphaba is one of the film’s two central characters. Also, the trailer hints at the presence of Dorothy in this part of the story. Dorothy is central in The Wizard of Oz, upon which Wicked draws for inspiration.
The Musical, The Movies, The Inspiration
The trailer gives glimpses of the second movie in a pair of recently made movies. These new films bring to the screen a treasured Broadway musical. The musical is an adaptation of a book. The book, also called Wicked, is by Gregory Maguire. It builds on another book, providing nuanced alternative character interpretations. This book is The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum. It also builds on the film adaptation of the L. Frank Baum book. The title of this film adaptation is The Wizard of Oz.
The musical and movies focus on the friendship between the characters of Elphaba and Glinda. The Guardian states that these works focus on the characters’ “origin stories.” Elphaba in the movies is played by Cynthia Erivo. In the films, Glinda is played by Ariana Grande.
Elphaba corresponds to the Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz. The character’s trajectory provides compelling reasons for her actions. Glinda’s counterpart in The Wizard of Oz is Glinda the Good. Her character’s arc is also explored. In the films, Jeff Goldblum plays the character of the Wizard of Oz. Michelle Yeoh is Madame Morrible, and Jonathan Bailey is Fiyero.
Why The Movie Adaptation is in Two Parts
Releasing the film version of Wicked in two parts allowed the filmmakers freedom. John M. Chu is the director of the two-part movie musical. According to The Guardian, Chu explains, “We decided to give ourselves a bigger canvas.” The two sections of the movie adaptation were filmed and edited together. Being able to expand into two movies allowed the adaptation to include more.
Chu states that the filmmakers “tried to cut songs or trim characters.” However, every potential omission felt like a compromise that would be detrimental to the adaptation. Winnie Holzman commented in 2024 on splitting the adaptation into two. Holzman worked on the film as a screenwriter. According to Holzman, members of the film’s creative team agreed there is “too much story.” To include everything crucial and entertaining, there needed to be more than one film. In addition, Holzman states that “nobody wanted to cut any songs.”
