On Saturday night, WWE’s grand spectacles took place. Last night’s WrestleMania kicked off in Sin City with some of the biggest names in professional wrestling. The event featured seven matches, and fans saw three title changes. The main event featured three of the biggest superstars in the sport: the Tribal Chief Roman Reigns, Seth “Freakin’” Rollins, and CM Punk. The night kicked off with the WWE World Heavyweight Champion facing the popular underdog, Jey Uso.
Jey Uso Opens the Night With a Yeet!
Jey Uso opened WrestleMania with a bang. His entrance included dancers waving flags with “Yeet” on them down the long rampway. The Las Vegas Raiderettes lined the rampway as Uso made his way to the ring. The stadium rocked with fans doing the “Yeet.”
The Underdog Wins Big
The match was not anything to brag about in the history books. It contained several dead moments and stare-downs, dragging the bout out. The match did not include any big moves, but Jey Uso fans loved every minute of it. In the end, Uso made Gunther tap out of a sleeper hold, and the Las Vegas crowd went insane.
This is Uso’s first singles world title. Uso recently spoke about this being his “last run” as he eyes retirement after a spectacular 17-year career. It is likely Uso’s feud with Gunther is far from over, but there are also many other deserving men on the roster.
War Raiders vs New Day
The World Tag Team Champions, the War Raiders, put their world titles on the line against the most unpopular tag team in the WWE, The New Day. The match was not anything flashy, and there were no big moments, but it ended with The New Day back on top of the tag team division.
13 Time World Champs
Love them or hate them, The New Day has been on an incredible run as heels. This victory gave them their 13th World Tag Team title run. Hopefully, the heels will add some excitement to the tag team division that has had trouble keeping fans’ attention lately.
Naomi vs Jade Cargill
This bout was all about revenge. Cargill was looking to make Naomi pay for injuring her and costing her months of in-ring action. This was Cargill’s first WrestleMania. The two women went after each other immediately, and the bout went back and forth. In the end, Jade Cargill used her signature move to defeat Naomi.
Cargill Takes the Win
It will be interesting to see where these two women go from here. Though it appears pretty certain that both of them will eventually be dealing with Bianca Belair. It is uncertain if Naomi will continue as a heel, but she has played the role to perfection.
U.S. Champ L.A. Knight vs Jacob Fatu
Jacob Fatu is a beast, and many believe he is the future of the WWE. It is a difficult task to take down “The Samoan Werewolf,” as Knight quickly learned. Knight had his shining moments, but the majority of the match belonged to Fatu. In the end, Fatu hit the moonsault to win his first singles title.
The ending to this one did not surprise anyone. Fatu’s signing to the WWE was a highly anticipated one, and he has not let the fans down. Now that he is out of the shadow of the Bloodline, he has become a full-fledged star.
Rey Fenix vs El Grande Americano
This match was booked as Rey Mysterio vs. El Grande Americano, but an injury caused Rey Fenix to become Mysterio’s replacement. This was Fenix’s first WrestleMania. He joined the roster just a few weeks ago, and despite being put into the match at the last minute, he put on an incredible show.
In the end, El Grande Americano used a loaded mask to take the win. It is unclear how long the WWE plans to continue with the comedic El Grande Americano gimmick, but it feels as if the character is already starting to lose traction.
Tiffany Stratton vs Charlotte Flair
The WWE Women’s World Championship was on the line in this one. World champ Tiffany Stratton started the event with a huge pop. Stratton’s entrance was sponsored by Mattel, and she came out in a pink Barbie box.
For many wrestling fans, this was the match of the night. The two women had been going at each other for weeks. There were several verbal attacks between the two leading up to this match, and Flair continued those attacks throughout the bout.
Flair appeared to be toying with Stratton, but the tide quickly changed when Flair set up for a moonsault and was caught by Stratton. Flair landed hard on her knee, which she had surgery on almost a year ago. Stratton immediately targeted the injured knee. After Flair missed a spear attack, Stratton quickly set her up for the Prettiest Moonsault for the win. It remains Tiffy Time in the WWE.
Reigns vs Rollins vs Punk
Going into this bout, everyone knew that Paul Heyman would play a major role, and he did just that. Reigns’ “Wiseman” walked to the ring with C.M. Punk, and Reigns did nothing to hide how much that angered him.
This match took place in and out of the ring, and each man had a moment where it looked as if they were heading to victory. Reigns and Rollins could have worked together to put out Punk, but neither trusted the other enough to go through with it, and for good reason.
Heyman’s Betrayal
In the end, Heyman picked up a steel chair when both Reigns and Punk were down after an assault by Rollins. Heyman appeared torn as to who he wanted to give the chair to, and in the end, slid it to CM Punk, clearly disappointing Reigns. Heyman slid into the ring and helped Punk to his feet. As Punk headed toward Reigns with the chair, Heyman went to his knees and hit Punk from behind with a low blow.
Reigns was all smiles as he believed his Wiseman had chosen him after all. As Reigns took the chair, preparing to hit Rollins from behind, bringing The Shield breakup to the forefront, Heyman again dropped to his knees and betrayed Reigns with a low blow.
Rollins is a Paul Heyman Guy
Rollins put out his hand, and Heyman handed him the chair. Just like the end of The Shield, Rollins hit Reigns in the back with the chair. He then used his signature stomp and covered Reigns for the win.
This was WrestleMania night one’s shocker. Rollins stole the show and became the newest Paul Heyman Guy. Now it will be interesting to see if Rollins and Heyman join forces with The Rock. As far as WrestleManias go, 41 was far from the greatest, but they did wrap it up with a bang, leaving fans satisfied with the night’s events.
