According to Maryland State Police, Prince George’s County Public Safety Communications received an iPhone crash alert at approximately 11:45 p.m., indicating a possible crash near Routes 50 and 301. Route 50 is a major east-to-west highway used by Marylanders and motorists to travel to Ocean City or for the daily commute to Washington, D.C.

The alert launched a large-scale search involving multiple agencies, including the Prince George’s County Fire Department, Maryland State Police, Prince George’s County Police Department, Anne Arundel County Police Department and Bowie City Police Department.

Despite the immediate response, authorities did not locate the aircraft until approximately 3:45 a.m. Sunday. The wreckage was found in a wooded area off Scarlett Oak Court, just yards from a townhome community.

This wooded area is a popular trail used daily by Bowie residents for biking, walking, and simply being with nature. It is located along one of the main roads, Rt. 450, used for travel between Bowie and Crofton in Maryland. Route 450 eventually feeds into 301. This area is not remote, and many vehicles use these paths and roads every day. Maryland State Police said in a statement did say in a statement “There were no other injuries reported,” just the three deceased on the plane.

Crash Occurred Near Homes

Maryland State Police spokeswoman Elena Russo described the crash as a tragic incident that could have had even greater consequences because of its proximity to nearby homes. “It’s absolutely a tragic incident that we are here investigating today; it could’ve been even worse because of the proximity of the crash, literally, right next to a townhome community in Bowie,” Russo said.

Residents in the area expressed shock after learning where the plane had come down. One resident told local WBAL-TV, “I couldn’t believe it. “I felt horrible. It’s unbelievable, a plane crashing in your backyard. It’s just nerve-racking.” Officials said there was no reported damage to nearby homes.

Mayor Michael Estève of Bowie provided additional details about the overnight response in a Facebook post Sunday morning.

“Something that went wrong with the plane. The plane went down here in Bowie on 450 and Superior Lane. Law enforcement from the county, the state, the city, as well as Anne Arundel County came out to search for the plane. There was no smoke, there was no fire, not even the smell of gas.”

The mayor noted that the lack of visible signs made locating the aircraft especially difficult during the overnight search operation.

Aircraft Believed to Be on Training Flight

Investigators believe the aircraft belongs to a local flight school in Montgomery County and may have been participating in a training flight at the time of the crash.

Forensic analysts from the Maryland State Police Forensic Sciences Division responded to process the crash scene and collect evidence.

As of Sunday afternoon, investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board remained on scene. News crews and television helicopters could still be seen in the area Sunday afternoon, as authorities continued to document evidence and examine the wreckage.
