Critical Missile Strikes, Blockades, and Back‑Channel Talks: Inside a Rapidly Widening Conflict

One of the strikes ended with a missile landing nearby United States 5th Fleet Headquarters in Manama, Bahrain, with a bridge adorned with flags spanning a calm marina. Modern high-rise buildings and moored yachts enhance the urban waterscape.

Regional tensions escalated throughout the past week as Israel and Iran exchanged a series of retaliatory air operations, beginning with Israeli strikes on Hezbollah drone facilities in Beirut and followed by multiple Iranian missile barrages. Israel responded with attacks on Iranian air defense, missile, and drone infrastructure across several provinces, while Hezbollah and Houthi forces broadened the conflict through cross‑border threats and maritime pressure.

The United States became increasingly entangled after an American Apache helicopter was downed near Oman, prompting CENTCOM to intensify blockade enforcement and strike Iranian military assets. Diplomatic messaging from Iran, the United States, and regional militias signaled both hardening red lines and attempts to shape negotiations amid the escalating violence.

According to reporting from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), the New York Times, and a United States Central Command (CENTCOM) press release, United States forces conducted self-defensive strikes on June 9, 2026. CENTCOM stated that the United States struck approximately 20 targets in southern Iran, including surveillance radar sites, air defenses, and ground control stations, in response to the United States Apache Helicopter that was downed by a suspected Iranian Shahed drone on June 8, 2026. Through the Iranian media outlet Defa Press alongside the New York Times, cited by the ISW, Iran responded through multiple drone and missile volleys against United States bases within Bahrain, Jordan, and Kuwait.

The New York Times reported that the majority of the assaults were stopped, except for one that landed near the United States Navy 5th Fleet Headquarters in Manama, Bahrain; it concluded that there were no casualties. The ISW noted that the official Telegram channel for the Iranian Students’ News Agency (ISNA) reported that Iranian Foreign Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Esmail Baghaei made statements on June 10, 2026, stating that Iran would review negotiations with the United States following the previous night’s events. Shortly afterwards, the ISW cited a Fox News post on X in which President Donald Trump stated that the United States was organizing another set of strikes on Iranian infrastructure if no progress was made in negotiations.

Israeli Forces: Destroying Hezbollah Infrastructure

IDF Online via X (Formerly Twitter)

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) X account was cited by the ISW reporting strikes continuing in southern Lebanon between June 9, 2026, and June 10, 2026. A cache of X posts from the IDF account showed seizure of and the destruction of weapons caches, killing fighters, and destroying Hezbollah infrastructure. The ISW noted statements made on June 10, 2026, by Lebanese security sources to Saudi media: the IDF sought to advance along Beaufort Castle towards Kfar Tebnit and Ali Taher Hill in conjunction with Biyyadah towards Majdal Zoun and Mazraat Buyut al Sayad. This direction was heading both southeast and southwest in Lebanon.

Multiple outlets on Telegram made posts the ISW noted, detailing the IDF and Hezbollah striking each other through both sectors on June 10, 2026.

Iraq: Consolidation Forces

According to reports from Shafaq, which the ISW cited, Kataib al Imam Ali submitted files and data to the Iraqi federal government’s disarmament committee on its members, weapons, and vehicles. This move is compliant with the Iraqi government’s goal of disarmament and integration of Iranian-backed militia into Iraq’s security establishment, including Iranian-backed Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF).

Action And Diplomacy: Iran’s Deal May Become Reality

Reports from the Supreme Leader’s website, cited by the ISW, argued that Iran does not care if they return to open hostilities and end the ceasefire on June 10, 2026. However, according to an interview on June 9, 2026, the ISW cited statements from Vice President JD Vance with CBS News saying he felt the United States was close to reaching a deal, highlighting a change in opinion from statements recorded by Reuters on May 28, 2026, where Vice President JD Vance felt the negotiations were close but not quite ready.

According to unspecified sources on June 11, 2026, Axios reported, which the ISW noted, Qatari and Iranian officials said they reached a final text that the United States would accept. The ISW cited the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC)-affiliated Fars News outlet, which likewise said the United States would have to accept the framework of Iran’s text. A warning posted on X, cited by the ISW, came from Supreme Leader Military Adviser Mohsen Rezaei, stating the United States must either lose the last shred of its credibility or agree to Iran’s terms on June 11, 2026.

The ISW cited Khabar Online, which published on June 11, 2026, a Parliamentary National Security and Foreign Policy Committee member, Esmail Kowsari, claiming that pressure on the United States Economy throughout the war has led President Donald Trump to attempt to push Iran to succumb to his goals.

The Strait of Hormuz: Closure Amid CENTCOM Enforcement

Iran CLOSES Strait of Hormuz until FURTHER NOTICE via The National Desk YouTube Channel

The Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA) announced on X, as ISW cited, stating the Strait of Hormuz was closed and that ships with clearance to transit must wait within the international waterway for further instructions. The ISW took note of President Donald Trump’s Truth Social post on June 11, 2026, stating the strikes previously scheduled for the night of June 11, 2026, against Iran were cancelled following discussions with the highest level of Iranian leadership. Fars News, however, denied the claim made by President Donald Trump in a post on X, as cited by the ISW, clarifying that it is likely to be approved based on the United States’ approval of Iran’s text.

An announcement made on June 10, 2026, on X by CENTCOM, alongside reporting by Axios, the ISW recorded further strikes by United States forces on Iranian drone command units, surveillance assets, air defenses, and radar systems in an effort to degrade Iran’s ability to strike United States forces and commercial ships in the waterway. Posts to X and Telegram channels shared satellite images confirming strikes on Bandar Abbas International Airport and explosions across southern Iran, Kish Island, Minab City in Hormozgan Province, and Qeshm Island on June 10, 2026, the ISW reported. A series of X posts were noted by the ISW reporting United States forces striking multiple targets on the outskirts of Tehran City.

According to the ISW, CENTCOM reported on June 10, 2026, via X, that United States forces disabled an oil tanker motor vessel, Jalveer, a Guinea-Bissau-flagged ship, after it attempted to violate the blockade on Iranian transports. Based on reports from CENTCOM, the ISW noted this was the third vessel disabled this week for attempting to violate the blockade. CENTCOM posts on X, all cited through the ISW, noted two Palau-flagged tankers, Marivex on June 8, 2026, and Settebello on June 9, 2026, in conjunction with the Guinea-Bissau-flagged Jalveer, bringing the total of disabled ships to 9 with 135 vessels redirected as of June 11, 2026, while allowing 42 to transit since the blockade began on April 13, 2026.

United Arab Emirates: An Audience With Iran

The ISW cited Bloomberg reporting that senior Emirati and Iranian national security officials met in person on June 11, 2026. This was the first such meeting since the conflict began between the United States and Israel against Iran. Bloomberg, according to the ISW, reported that the United Arab Emirates sought to reduce tensions with Iran and had grown increasingly skeptical about the prospects for political change in Iran or a negotiated settlement between Iran and the United States. Bloomberg also noted that the fragility of the ceasefire and disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz have harmed the UAE’s security and economy.

Bloomberg, as cited by the ISW, reported that Iranian officials had attempted to arrange a meeting with the UAE. Emirati officials reportedly required proof that the Iranian delegation had direct access to Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps before agreeing to the talks. Bloomberg assessed that the June 11 meeting proceeded positively and noted that Iran has not targeted the UAE since the May 17, 2026 strike on the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant. Bloomberg added that Iran did strike Jordan, Kuwait, and Bahrain on June 9 and June 10, 2026.

Israeli Forces: Responding In Lebanon

A series of X posts were recorded by the ISW, one from the Israeli Foreign Ministry stating on June 11, 2026, that Hezbollah launched drones at three locations within Israeli territory between June 10, 2026, and June 11, 2026. The IDF reported drone attacks on forces inside Lebanon during the same period, but did not report drones entering Israeli territory. Through the Telegram channel Military Media in the Islamic Resistance of Lebanon (mmirleb), Hezbollah separately claimed the launch of fixed-wing drones targeting IDF operations at Nimr al Jamal, northern Israel, on June 11, 2026.

The ISW cited a military correspondent for Times of Israel on X, reporting that the IDF had plans to expand operations against Hezbollah, posted on June 11, 2026. According to the military correspondent, the new offensive would move to the city of Nabatieh, four miles north of the military’s current advancement into Lebanon. The correspondent reporting on X claimed an unnamed IDF official said it may launch offensive tactics west along the north bank of the river to end Hezbollah occupation instead.

It was further stated that leaders had yet to choose the path they want to pursue. A military correspondent posting to Telegram, cited by the ISW, identified Hezbollah preparations to hold Nabatieh as it anticipated the IDF’s northward approach. It was noted that the report said Hezbollah was extending its first-person view (FPV) drone attacks against IDF positions in Lebanon. They further reported Hezbollah conducted attacks from deeper inside Lebanon using fiber-optic FPV drones, which are immune to jamming.

The ISW cited the correspondent’s Telegram stating Hezbollah’s fiber-optic FPV drones have a range of up to 20 kilometers, according to recent attacks targeting IDF in Lebanon.
